Location

Painswick, often referred to as the "Queen of the Cotswolds," is a stunning market town known for its stunning stone buildings, beautiful scenery, and rich history.

Surrounded by rolling hills, Painswick sits at the head of the five valleys, making it a great retreat for walkers. The Cotswold Way runs through the Golf Course on the Painswick Beacon, providing wonderful walks and stunning views.

One of the highlights of Painswick, however, is the famous Painswick Rococo Garden, which showcases beautiful design and horticulture from the 18th century. The town also has a number of quaint shops, cafes, and pubs, providing a cozy atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

Living in Painswick means enjoying a slower pace of life, but crucially it is well placed to access the motorway network M5, which provides access to Cheltenham and Bristol, and a fast road to Cirencester and, in addition, the M4 to London. Trains from Stroud (4 miles) leave every hour to London and take just 85 minutes into Paddington.

Local schools are excellent in both the private and state sector with highly sought after grammar schools in Stroud, Gloucester and Cheltenham and a popular primary school.

Chapter Three

Chapters Past

Painswick rose to importance in the C17 and C18 as a centre for the production of woollen cloth with the majority of its buildings dating from this period of prosperity. Amesbury house is a particularly fine example, the street on which it sits, Vicarage Street, began to be developed in the C17, mainly to accommodate weavers who found it convenient to be close to the mills. In the C19 the street was further developed with the construction of new houses, and many of the C17 cottages were also restored at this time. Amesbury House is formed of an original C17 century house which was combined with two neighbouring 19C cottages in the C20 to create a single dwelling.
